Right in the center of town, just off the Malecón
Tarapacá (The Boulevard), you will find the Anaconda Center.
It’s one of the best places for arts, crafts and souvenirs. The
artisans work here side by side in their small studios, where they sell
their products, like paintings, statuettes, jewelry and souvenirs at very
reasonable prices.

One of the young
artists is Billy, pictured here on the left. He makes jewelry and
souvenirs, everything by hand and from scratch. One of the most impressive
techniques he uses to make necklaces and bracelets is called the Peruvian
Stitch.

It is a
complicated technique to braid metal wire into a heavy quality, but
surprisingly flexible and beautiful chain. Making one chain can take up to
five days of work, so it is a very labor-intensive process. In combination
with some of the most stunning, polished stones from the region,

his work makes for
excellent gifts or souvenirs and at prices starting at around 30 dollars,
we say; it’s a lot of money, but it’s dirt cheap!
Recently, a
second Anaconda artisan center opened up right on The Boulevard. It is
located between the restaurants La Noche and El
Meson. You can stroll in, tak a look at all the
artwork there, and enjoy a drink and/or a meal at the restaurant, located
in the back.
